Plan B

Well AMEN ... a headline for you FDA OKs nonprescription ‘morning-after’ pill Decision allows over-the-counter sale of Plan B for those 18 or older! Can I get a hallelujah?

Seriously, WHY WHY WHY has this been a contentious issue since 1992 or maybe even earlier? My only problem with the headline is that it is restricted to those over 18. Because we all knows girls under 18 should not be able to decide whether they have a child or not. I thought maybe my opinion would change once I actually had a daughter, but no not so much. I want my daughter to have all of the safe, healthy options available to her. I surely hope that she and I will continue the relationship we have now (where she tells all) but I am realistic. I know that may not happen at 15, 16, or 17. Right now my policy is she asks a question, I answer it honestly.

A recent conversation during a discussion about marriage, her: "mommmmmm a man can't marry a man" Me: "well honey sometimes is a man loves a man they can live together and be with each other like daddy and I are" Her: "noooooooo" (not because she's homophobic, just because she's 4). Me: "yep, its true. noone can predict who they will love the most of all." Her: "I love gramma most of all." end of convo. ;)

Anyway, back to my point. I love my daughter, I want nothing more than for her to make good, healthy decisions. But she (like me and you and even the religious right - though they'd deny it) is human. And to be human means to err. She is already a strong, independent person. She should have ALL the resources available to her ... no matter what. It is her body. It is her decision. PERIOD. I don't care if she's 5 or 55.

The funniest argument I did hear is that men will buy this OTC and force it on their girlfriends/wives to prevent unwanted children. Seriously, if he can't pull it together to buy a condom do you SERIOUSLY think he's gonna go get this drug and slip it to someone? Yeah, no.

A great article if you want to read more about how the entire debacle has played out over time. No prescription for Plan B: It's about time! How politics and ignorance got in the way of public health.

Man people piss me off sometimes!!!
